    Research

How do you conduct your research?

We abide by the following processes when conducting research:

    • Institutional Review Board (IRB): Proposals for human subjects research are reviewed and approved by an IRB and adhere to all requirements and standards of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and, where relevant, state government.
    • Peer-Reviewed Research: The majority of our research is government-funded and peer-reviewed through the scientific review group processes of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and through the scientific journal review process. Regardless of source of funding, all research must comply with NIH guidelines related to the protection of human subjects.
    • Advisory Commissions and Expert Review Panels: In addition to our government-funded research, we conduct other research designed primarily for non-academic audiences that seek to inform policy and practice around substance use prevention and addiction treatment. The targeted audiences for this type of research include policymakers, parents, educators, health professionals and other professionals working in the fields of addiction and substance use prevention and treatment. These reports, which are self-published, are typically funded by foundations or corporations, with the explicit provision that the funder may not have any influence over the design, content or reporting of the research and its findings. In most cases, we assemble an independent advisory panel of individuals with expertise in the topic area of research to provide advice, evaluation and review of the research questions, methodology, data analysis, conclusions and recommendations.
    • Data Analysis: Our data analysis experts are responsible for conducting statistical analyses for each report and research article. Our team of researchers is responsible for reviewing and approving data analysis, methodology and the interpretation and dissemination of findings.
    • Journal Publications: Findings from our research are often submitted for publication in a variety of academic journals in the fields of medicine, psychology and public health, where they undergo peer-review before publication.
