    General Counsel

    Partnership to End Addiction is a national nonprofit uniquely positioned to reach, engage and help families impacted by addiction. With decades of experience in research, direct service, communications and partnership-building, we provide families with personalized support and resources — while mobilizing policymakers, researchers and health care professionals to better address addiction systemically on a national scale.     We are seeking an experienced General Counsel to provide legal counsel and advice for Partnership to End Addiction with regard to all pertinent legal, regulatory, compliance, and business considerations including, but not limited to, risk management, contracts, grants compliance, non-profit and board governance, employment matters, and data security and privacy issues.  The successful candidate possesses a JD from an accredited law school, has at least 10 years’ experience, and is barred in New York, or barred and in good standing in at least one state and eligible to register as in-house counsel in New York.  The General Counsel reports to the Chief Executive Officer.

    Responsibilities of the job include: 

    • Demonstrate and reflect the mission and values of the organization.
    • Broadly responsible for organizational risk management and proper stewardship of assets.
    • Review and negotiate all Partnership to End Addiction contracts.
    • Oversee federal government grants compliance.
    • Manage organizational data security, including compliance with HIPAA.
    • Formulate, implement and monitor policies to promote legal compliance.
    • Manage, protect and expand intellectual property assets.
    • Manage outside and pro-bono counsel and other legal consultants.
    • Support HR (e.g. employment matters, policy, plan documents) and finance (e.g. annual review of Form 990).
    • Provide general advice and opinions on all legal matters affecting organization.

    Qualifications: 

    • Attorney possessing a JD from an accredited law school.
    • Barred in New York, or barred and in good standing in at least one state and eligible to register as In-House Counsel in New York.
    • At least 10 years’ experience; experience with New York non-profit law preferred.
    • Several years-experience serving as General Counsel or in a senior position in the general counsel’s office of a complex organization.
    • Excellent analytical and leadership skills.
    • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, as well as strong presentation, project management and team management abilities.
    • Strong interpersonal skills as well as negotiation and persuasion abilities.
    • Excellent time management skills and the ability to multi-task effectively.
    • Adept at problem-solving and exhibiting high-degree of energy, positivity, honesty, communication, cooperation and drive.
