Washington State Considers Postponing New Rules on Marijuana Sales

After hearing comments from hundreds of people about proposed new rules for marijuana sales, officials in Washington state said they want to delay implementing the regulations for a few months.

The rules will cover the selling, growing and processing of recreational marijuana, the Associated Press reports. The Washington state Liquor Control Board was scheduled to adopt the final rules on Wednesday, but decided to postpone the process so it can revise the rules to address the comments. The board’s staff wants to hold at least one more public hearing, adopt the rules in mid-October, and have them take effect in mid-November.

Participants in the hearings asked for clarification on a number of issues, including rules limiting the amount of marijuana that can be produced, the number of marijuana stores and their locations, and how much marijuana people with licenses can have.

Last November, Washington state voters approved Initiative 502, which legalized the recreational use of marijuana for adults. The law requires the marijuana rules to be in place by December 1, 2013.
