Mexican President Petitions U.S. to Curb Illegal Drug Use

Mexican President Felipe Calderon asked members of the U.S. Congress to ramp up action to reduce illegal drug use in the United States to help fight the war against narcotics traffickers at the U.S.-Mexico border, the Associated Press reported May 20.

While Calderon has found support from President Barack Obama and his pledge for immigration reform and enhanced border regulation – other topics addressed by the Mexican president during his speech before Congress — Beltway wisdom suggests that convincing Congress to take up the issue in an election year may be difficult.

In addition to more cooperation on border security and immigration, the Mexican President also pressed the importance of stopping the traffic of assault weapons to Mexico from the U.S.
