President Obama should continue to use alcohol in moderation but should keep trying to quit smoking, according to doctors who conducted his routine medical exam.
Reuters reported Feb. 28 that physicians at the National Naval Medical Center pronounced Obama healthy and fit for duty, noting his daily exercise routine, good blood pressure and heart rate. However, they recommended that Obama continue his smoking-cessation efforts, which include use of nicotine-replacement therapy.
The National Review also reported that doctors recommended that Obama continue “moderation in alcohol intake.” A misreading of this recommendation led some conservatives to suggest that Obama’s doctors were calling for the president to cut back on his drinking.
