Lawmakers in New Hampshire are considering bills that could decriminalize or even legalize marijuana possession, the North Andover Eagle Tribune reported Jan. 31.
HB-1652 would allow adults to possess up to one ounce of marijuana; the measure calls for the drug to be taxed and regulated by the state. HB-1653 would be less far-reaching, calling for decriminalization of possession of up to a quarter-ounce of the drug.
Observers say that the dire financial situation in the state budget could lead lawmakers to give more consideration to the idea of taxing marijuana sales. The House Criminal Justice Committee recently voted to study HB-1652; if approved by the full House, the report would be due in November.
