The tobacco company Altria announced it is pulling its MarkTen and Green Smoke pod-style e-cigarette devices from the market, according to The Wall Street Journal. The company also will discontinue selling many e-cigarette flavors to combat underage use.
Altria’s e-cigarettes do not represent a large segment of the U.S. market, the article notes. Juul is the most popular brand of pod-style e-cigarettes.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced it is investigating whether e-cigarette companies are marketing their products illegally. The investigation is part of the FDA’s plan to address the epidemic of youth e-cigarette use.
The FDA “appreciates any voluntary steps companies can take to address the youth access and appeal of e-cigarettes,” a spokesman told the newspaper. “All policy options are on the table, including taking additional steps to address flavors that appeal to kids and combat illegal sales to minors.”
